YOUNGSTERS ARE BANKING ON SAVING THEIR CASH AT SCHOOL
Western Gazette 10th April
With the world preparing for a credit crunch, youngsters in Sherborne are anticipating the squeeze.
More than 200 years ago, American writer and statesman Benjamin Franklin advised: "If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as getting." It is this principle that representatives of First Dorset Credit Union hope today's pupils of The Gryphon School will grasp.A new service point in the school will not only encourage youngsters to open a
young savers account, but volunteers will be on hand once a week to help them make regular deposits.
Project leader and volunteer David Fitzmaurice said: "It is really trying to get the students to save a little instead of spending everything they have got. We are trying to get the youngsters into the habit of saving."
Deputy headteacher Nicki Edwards said she hopes the volunteer-staffed service point will stand pupils in good financial stead for the future.
"As a business and enterprise school, we recognise the need for young people to develop money-management skills early on in life, so that they can learn to save effectively and avoid getting themselves into debt in later life," she said.
"This link will help to enhance our work in this area and give our students easy access to a sensible way of saving for the future."
With service points operating across the county, First Dorset Credit Union is a community support organisation which aims to provide a safe and ethical alternative to high street banks and doorstep lenders.
